About Me: How Hip-Hop and Rap Has Influenced My Life
Music is such a controversial form of art and entertainment that has a different impact on every individual who listens. There are many different types of music but only one has changed my life multiple times in all types of ways. That genre of music is definitely rap, this music is able to incorporate “rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular”, which is performed or chanted in a variety of ways. The only genre of music that I can relate to the most and that’s why I love it.
My name is Austin Williams, I’m a junior in college that also plays basketball. I reside in Roseland, New Jersey which is a predominantly Caucasian area. I live with my mother, father and sister. I have played basketball since I was three, it has guided me to many different places throughout my life. Hopefully it will continue to after my college career is over. Growing up in Jersey caused my life to be riddled with trials and tribulations. For elementary and middle school I went to a school that was mostly white so it was hard being one of the three black kids in the entire school. I went to Seton Hall Preparatory School which had way more diversity and really had a large impact on my life. I met friends there that I’m still really close with till this day. My friends influenced me to delve more deep inside of the enormous world of rap and hip-hop.
Throughout life my love for the genre has grew stronger and stronger everyday. I strive to discover new music every single day, it has become more of a hobby than just a habit. Exploring hip-hop and rap is like exploring a whole new world with new adventures. Every song I listen to is a trip into the minds of the artist. This genre has gotten me through so many obstacles in my life. I just want to share my insight on the subject.
